I just recently read about a new club going in above Fran’s on the P&L at 14th and Main. Cordish, AKA P&L, is joining forces with Ryan Maybee, AKA Manifesto and The Rieger Hotel, to create a rum fueled Jazz Club.
As a person who lives and works in downtown, I’m intrigued. However, I can’t help but wonder if it will bring the local crowd it will deserve. I rarely venture into the P&L, and if I do it is to have beers at the Flying Saucer. On occasion I will utilize the Bristol or Gordon Biersch for it’s proximity as a convenient location to meet clients for lunch or happy hour.
I wonder if having a Jazz Club in such a highly trafficked area of town will distract from the existing Jazz district at 18th and Vine? Perhaps a better question would be, will some “downtown” jazz help motivate people to seek out jazz in other places, conversely boosting attendance to the more traditional venues?
Either way, I will be interested to see how this turns out. Coupled with the Alamo Drafthouse taking over the former Mainstreet AMC Theater, this might fortunately or unfortunately be a corner I can’t avoid.
